New This Week At Winchester Wine & Spirits:
Southern Tier Oak-Aged Cuvee #2: A rich amber ale that pours a frothy chino head. Aromas of baking spices, toasted coconut, bourbon and vanilla. The body is thick and creamy but not syrupy. Initial flavors of fruits, berry, spiced apple and fig come to mind, with a slight whisky-like burn. The malt becomes more apparent as the beer warms, bringing out some caramel and pound cake notes. The oak is very noticeable, giving a smooth vanilla twinge to the ale with some toasted notes and a nice buttery finish. Hops are noticeable, giving the finish a peppery feel which matches nicely with the slight alcohol burn. Overall a delicious beer perfect for pairing with a cheese course (think earthy/smokey cheeses) or enjoy it alone as a late night sipper.
.
Brooklyn Local #2: A new Belgian Dark Ale from Brooklyn Brewery. Pours a deep tobacco brown with a towering beige head that persists through the entire glass. The aroma is heady and complex with notes of cocoa, orange peel, nutmeg and brown sugar. The body is relatively light but full of peppy carbonation, much like it's Belgian brothers. The taste is extremely complex but won't blow out your palate halfway through the bottle. Notes of tropical fruits up front, think bananas and citrus, followed by an intriguing mix of chocolate and tobacco from the malt and a dry grapefruit bitterness from the hops. The finish is long, begging you to take another sip. This beer is a great example of what Belgian darks can be, intriguing yet drinkable, and can easily be paired with many types of cuisine. Anytime you would serve a medium bodied red try some Brooklyn Local 2 instead!
Matching the correct beer with your cuisine can be just as important as selecting a suitable wine. Beer is just as complex a beverage, being brewed from choice ingredients at precise measurements to achieve a wide array of tastes and styles.
